conversational marketing experiment
In late December of 2008 I registered a domain and tossed up a landing page collecting email invitations. At the end of January, I had collected 2000 email addresses.
All by writing a couple of blog comments and placing links on various social sites. Not spamming, but by having conversations within the community. The blog posts I left comments on were related to the subject matter of the site.
From there, I let the site sit. I did nothing with it until mid-February, at which point I took it offline entirely.
On March 20th, I put the site back up and launched the application. Later that night, 148 visitors had taken a look.
… then today, while going over reports, I noticed something: yesterday, 1286 people had visited.
In the last 5 days, 2973 uniques, 5707 pageviews. Today is well on track to hit 2k uniques.
I never sent out emails to those 2000 addresses. All of that traffic was a direct result of having a few conversations within the communities I targeted.
I now fully understand why domainers grab expired domains.
